Based on the returning players and the excitement of the future, the Guerin Catholic girls basketball team is poised to have a breakthrough this season.
The Golden Eagles have a large and talented senior class made up of familiar names and solid players. The juniors on the team also return varsity experience. Guerin Catholic finished last season 11-10, the second consecutive year that the Golden Eagles improved their record.
“We are excited about this season,” said GC coach Marc Quaranta. “We have a great current team constructed, but we are also excited about the future and the young players we have in our program. We feel like we can compete with any team on any day. As hard as our girls work, and as unselfish as they are, we expect good things on and off the court.”
The senior list includes last year’s leading scorer for the Golden Eagles. Katie Koger averaged 10.7 points per game, and also had 2.9 steals and 2.1 rebounds per contest. Another senior, Kathryn Loso, brings back 8.3 points and 7.3 rebounds (by far the leader in that category) from last season. Guerin’s three other seniors, Halley Buehler, Mia Thompson and Hannah Weitzel, all played significant varsity minutes as well.
The three juniors on the team – Megan Cobb, Natalie Fernandez and Caitlin Sharpe – all played a handful of varsity games last season as well. A newcomer to look out for is freshman Reagan Haines, as she made the varsity roster as well.
The Golden Eagles begin their season on Saturday by hosting University at the Eagles Nest. Guerin Catholic plays its first three games at home, welcoming Greenfield-Central on Nov. 12 and Hamilton Heights on Nov. 16.
