There was some well-deserved celebration at the Hamilton Southeastern tent Tuesday night at the Hamilton County cross country meet, as the Royals boys won the team championship.
Southeastern used its depth to score 40 points and come away with the victory at the county meet, which took place at the Chinquapin Ridge course at White River Elementary School in Noblesville. While there was a lot of excitement, Royals coach Joe Golden was quick to put everything in perspective.
“Being a county meet, sometimes we can make too much of it and I just wanted to make sure we just came in and put it in place that it’s the first step in a long season,” said Golden.
It was certainly a big first step for HSE, and an opportunity for the Royals to show what they can do. Southeastern had four runners, all of them seniors, finish in the top 10, led by Nolan Satterfield’s individual runner-up performance.
Bennett Dubois placed fourth for the Royals, Will Marquardt was sixth and Garrett Hicks finished in 10th place.
“Our focus has been trying to pull everyone together and pack up and just keep that 1 to 4, 1 to 5 split as low as we can,” said Golden.
The next schools all finished very close to each other. Fishers nosed out Carmel by one point, 56-57 for second place. Noblesville was right there too, placing fourth with 60 points.
The Tigers placed two runners in the top 10. Senior Nick Pulos took seventh and freshman Sam Quaglianoli was next in line at eighth place. Fishers had three more runners finish in the top 16, helping to close the score early.
The Greyhounds will be a contender in every meet, of course, because they have Kole Mathison. Now a junior, Mathison ran away with the individual championship, clocking in at 15 minutes, 24 seconds. This is the third year in a row Mathison has won the county title.
“I think it went really well,” said Mathison. “A really good race. I think I ran well for the first race of the season. I executed what I wanted to do, which is go out and run hard and run for God and stay humble. I think I did that and stayed true to that.”
Senior Charles Schuman also reached the top 10 for Carmel, finishing ninth.
Noblesville was led by two runners that landed in the top five. Senior Joel Mumaw placed third and junior Asher Propst finished fifth.
CARMEL GIRLS SWEEP
In the girls race, Carmel won the team championship with a strong score of 30 points. The Greyhounds took care of business early, sweeping the top three positions, then getting two more runners in the top 13.
Senior Alivia Romaniuk was the individual winner, finishing the course in 18:35.9.
“I was very pleased with how I ran today,” said Romaniuk. “It’s very satisfying to see the preparation that we were doing pay off today.”
Junior Jasmine Klopstad placed second for the ‘Hounds, with senior Jamie Klavon finishing in third.
“We’re pretty excited overall,” said Taylor Marshall, who is in his first year coaching Carmel. “There’s always something to improve on, so we’ll come away with one or two things we did really well, then one thing to work on. But 1-2-3, some strong closes down the stretch, some young girls getting experience in the 5K, shaking off those nerves that they had early on, on the bus ride over here. I’m pretty pleased.”
Noblesville placed second with 45 points. The Millers had a fine race with their still-young team, landing four in the top 10. Sophomore Summer Rempe took sixth, then junior Paige Hazelrigg, freshman Brinkley Cooper and junior Brooke Lahee went 8-9-10.
Hamilton Southeastern finished third by scoring 67 points. Senior Allie Latta took fifth and sophomore Maggie Powers placed seventh for the Royals.
Fishers scored 120 points to take fourth place; senior Elizabeth Barrett led the Tigers by taking fourth.
In the junior varsity races, Fishers won the boys team race with 28 points, with the Tigers’ Elza Niemeier the individual winner in a time of 17:34.3. Carmel won the girls JV team race by scoring 22 points; the Greyhounds’ Emersyn Weaver was the individual winner in 21:32.9.
