After running to a victory last week, Noblesville ran some more this week in its home opener.
The Millers treated their home fans to a nice win on Friday, cruising past Terre Haute South 45-12. The only thing that stopped Noblesville was lightning, which forced a lengthy delay. But the Millers shrugged it off and got a convincing win that ran their record to 2-0 for the first time in six years.
“They had a couple good skill players and I thought we did a great job of containing them,” said Noblesville coach Dave Sharpe. He called the victory a “good team win.”
“We felt like we had a lot of guys play well on both sides of the ball,” said Sharpe. “We played very well on special teams as well.”
Logan Shoffner, who broke the Noblesville single-game rushing record last week, had another outstanding game. He got the Millers on the board 67 seconds into the game by gliding into the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown.
Shoffner scored three more touchdowns during the game. He ran in from 39 yards with 2:22 left in the first quarter, then blasted off on a 71-yard run during the first minute of the second period. Shoffner added a 12-yard run just 38 seconds into the third quarter – he has now scored eight touchdowns for the season.
Two more Millers players ran for touchdowns as well. Alairic Rogers-Walton took the ball into the end zone from the three-yard line midway through the second period. Jack Skomp scored on a 10-yard jog early in the third.
Noblesville kept its feet on the ground during the game. The Millers did not attempt any passes – all 380 yards of their total offense was gained by the run. Shoffner totaled 236 yards, while Rogers-Walton added 73 yards.
“The running game was very efficient,” said Sharpe. “Big credit goes to our big offensive line. All of our running backs did a great job of executing and staying on schedule with the chains.”
Seth Stone led the Noblesville defense with 8.5 tackles, six solo and five assists. Mac Lynas made two tackles for a loss.
The Millers host Fishers next Friday to begin Hoosier Crossroads Conference play.
“The HCC schedule is here and we’re going to get some great challenges from great teams,” said Sharpe. “There’s no weeks off in the HCC, everybody knows that.”
