The Hamilton Southeastern girls tennis team won two dual meets early this week over two ranked Hamilton County opponents.
The Royals are ranked themselves, tied for fifth in this week’s Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association poll. Southeastern continued to justify that ranking with a 5-0 win over No. 16 Westfield on Monday, then beat No. 9 Fishers 3-2 Tuesday in the Mudsock dual. The Royals are unbeaten for the season at 7-0.
Southeastern won four of the five matches against the Shamrocks in straight sets. The three-set match came in No. 1 singles, with the Royals team of Misha Bukkasagaram and Emily Orme prevailing over Westfield’s Maya Raymond and Olivia Krauss 6-3, 1-6, 6-0.
In the Mudsock battle, Bukkasagaram and Orme got HSE on the board first, winning in straight sets. Fishers’ Lucy Loy took the No. 1 singles match to even the score, but Emma Bieberich got the Royals up 2-1 by winning at No. 3 singles.
The Southeastern No. 2 doubles team of Meghan Slaninka and Kaylee Etheredge clinched the Mudsock trophy for the Royals with their straight-set win. With the score 5-3 in the second set, Slaninka played a strong service game and Etheredge helped her out at the net.
“We knew it was going to be a close match with the wind being a big factor, and our girls came out ready to play from the start,” said Southeastern coach Kirk Webber.
While that match was going on, No. 19-ranked Noblesville was hosting Westfield at the Noblesville East Middle School courts. The Millers beat the Shamrocks 4-1, sweeping all three singles matches in straight sets.
Noblesville’s No. 2 doubles team of Sierra Leach and Lina Hamashuk pulled out a three-set victory, 7-5 in the third set. Westfield’s Raymond and Krauss won the No. 1 doubles match in straight sets.
The Millers are now 7-3 for the season.
“They’ve had a really good season,” said Noblesville coach Tim Samons. “It’s a young team that competes very well. I think they’re surprising a lot of people.”
In a Monday match, the Millers beat Lawrence Central 5-0. Noblesville’s three singles players – No. 1 Alli Maskew, No. 2 Allie Stamm and No. 3 Josie Flinchum – all won 6-0, 6-0, while the Millers doubles teams only lost one game in each of their matches.
Last Friday, Noblesville defeated Brownsburg (now ranked No. 26) 4-1. Stamm won 6-2, 6-1 and Flinchum got a 6-3, 6-1 victory in singles. In doubles, Decker and David pulled out a 4-6, 6-0, 10-6 win, while Leach and Hamashuk cruised 6-0, 6-1.
