Girls state swimming: Carmel sends all 27 swims to finals

The Carmel girls swim team put itself in excellent position to extend its state championship streak after the Greyhounds’ performance in Friday’s state preliminaries at the IU Natatorium in downtown Indianapolis.
Carmel qualified all 27 of its swims to the Saturday finals. The Greyhounds advanced 23 swims to the championship heat and the other four to the consolation heat. Carmel earned the top seed in all three relays and placed three swimmers in the championship heat of the individual medley, 500 freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.
Individual first seeds for the Greyhounds are Gretchen Lueking in the 200 free and Meghan Christman in the 50 free. Lueking is also the second seed in the butterfly, with Madelyn Christman the second seed in the IM and Berit Berglund seeded second in the backstroke.
Fishers advanced 12 swims to the finals, placing nine in the championship heat and three more in the consols. JoJo Ramey is the Tigers’ highest seed, at fourth in the 500 free. Fishers sent its medley and 400 free relays into the championship heat, with the 200 free relay landing in the consolation heat.
Hamilton Southeastern qualified seven swims to the finals, with five reaching the championship heat and two more in the consolations. The Royals placed all three of their relays in the championship heat, with its medley relay team of Rebecca Ang, Kennedy Fisher, Audrey Crawford and Molly Pedersen the highest seed at fourth.
Noblesville will have six swims participate in the finals. Sammy Huff will attempt to defend her state title in the breaststroke, where she is seeded second. The Millers’ other five swims all reached the consolation heat, including two swims from Caitlin Marshall, in the butterfly and 500 free.
Westfield’s medley relay team of Alexa Boillat, Annie Spaletto, Hannah Jones and Macy Hoaglan qualified 16th and will swim in the consolation heat of that event.
The state swim meet begins at 9 a.m. with the diving competition. All three rounds – first, semi-finals and finals – will take place during the session. The swimming consolation and championship finals will begin at 3:30 p.m.
