Stephen B. “Dewey” Stewart

December 13, 1947 – March 27, 2020

Stephen B. “Dewey” Stewart, beloved brother, uncle and friend, was born December 13, 1947 and passed away on March 27, 2020 to travel on to a long overdue hero’s welcome.

Steve graduated from Noblesville High school in 1966, and along with several of his classmates, enlisted soon after. He served his country with honor and valor in the Army Infantry for two years before being discharged to a U.S. Veteran’s Hospital to recover from the battle wounds that earned him a Purple Heart. Though Steve survived the initial battle and lived a productive and happy life for many years, he finally succumbed to a more insidious battle wound – the cancer resulting from wartime exposure to Agent Orange, but not before putting up a valiant fight.

Steve played the guitar and loved fishing and camping in the woods. He lived in Colorado before returning to Indiana where he passed away at his home in Cicero. He is survived by his sisters, Vicki Jennings (Mike) and Jeni Toman (Terry); his brother, Mike Stewart (Sandy); five nieces and nephews; and four great- nieces and nephews.

Steve is also survived by another family of very close and devoted friends who served with him in Vietnam and/or partied and celebrated with him and cared for him during his illness. He will be buried in Crownland Cemetery along with his classmates and friends whose names are etched on the Vietnam Memorial Wall.

His parents, Franklin Stewart and Janet Tate, preceded him in death.

Stephen will be honored with a military funeral service officiated by Pastor Rick Bell and the Cicero American Legion Honor Guard at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Crownland Cemetery, 1776 Monument St., Noblesville. The ceremony will be followed by a Celebration of Life at the Cicero American Legion, 50 Washington Ave., Cicero. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.org.

Hartley Funeral Homes Cicero Chapel is entrusted with Steve’s care. You may send online condolences at hartleyfuneralhomes.com.
