Hamilton Southeastern hosted the Hoosier Crossroads Conference swimming and diving meet this weekend, and the Royals also provided an exciting finish to the event.
Southeastern’s boys were trailing Zionsville by 1.5 points going into the final race of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay. The relay squad of Keegan Streett, Evan Sellers, Marcus Eden and DJ Rogers finished that race by less than a half-second ahead of the Eagles, and that propelled HSE past Zionsville for the conference championship. Southeastern scored 430 points to the Eagles’ 425.5.
“In meets this close, there is always a tendency to focus on the final race – those four boys secured the win for the Royals, but our team would have never been in the position to win without an outstanding day from every team member,” said Royals coach Andy Pedersen.
Southeastern stayed close during the first eight events, helped out by a runner-up finish in the medley relay and Streett taking second in the 200 free. Connor Harrison and Andrew Christopher were second and third respectively in the butterfly.
The Royals won the 200 free relay, with Streett, Zack Bostock, Christopher and Rogers setting a new meet record. Eden, Ryan Harrison and Ethan Forbes had season bests in the backstroke, and Thomas Reising, Justin Voelker and Andrew Truxall went 4-5-6 in the breaststroke to keep Southeastern close.
“It is very hard to win a championship in the toughest swim/dive conference in the state so we are really proud of these young men,” said Pedersen. “They were unified and excited all day long plus just very very tough today.”
Fishers placed third with 384.5 points and won two events. Sebastien Otero and William Jansen went 1-2 in the diving, which was contested Friday night, and Aaron Frollo was first in the 500 free.
Westfield placed fifth with 194 points; Alex Casas took eighth in the breaststroke. Noblesville finished eighth as a team with 89 points, with Cameron Kramer taking 11th in the 500 free.
In the girls meet, Fishers won the team title with a score of 508.5 points. The Tigers led off the meet with a medley relay victory; that squad consisted of Jo Jo Ramey, Lydia Reade, Alexandra Stein and Corinne Yorkman.
Ellen Fero placed first in the 50 free, with Abby Jahns pacing the 500 free. Fishers won the 400 free relay; swimming on that team were Ramey, Jahns, Yorkman and Hannah Pratt.
Southeastern was a strong second in the girls meet by scoring 421 points. Molly Pedersen was a double winner in the 200 and 100 freestyles, with Sarah Ballard placing first in diving. Kennedy Fisher, Grace Newton, Pedersen and Kayleigh Witt also picked up a 200 free relay victory.
Noblesville finished fifth as a team with 208 points. Sammy Huff got a win for the Millers in the breaststroke. Westfield placed sixth with 166 points, with Macy Hoaglan taking sixth in the 200 free.
