Joan Clark-Artman, 93, Pendleton, formerly of Sheridan, passed away on Monday morning, September 9, 2019 at St. Vincent Hospital in Anderson. Born November 4, 1925 in Hamilton County, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Nell (Swain) Moore and a 1944 graduate of Sheridan High School.
Joan was a dietician for Noblesville Jr. High School for nearly 20 years. Following her time with Noblesville Schools, she worked as a seamstress for Aero Drapery. Joan also sold Avon products.
She was a member of the Sheridan Six Points Wesleyan Church, the Noblesville Home Ec. Club, the Boone County Antique Tractor Club, and a member of the Noblesville VFW Auxiliary.
No one in the family knows quite when she caught it, but Joan had the traveling bug. She and her late husband Joe used to travel just about anywhere there was a tractor show going on. Joe loved restoring old Bantam tractors and showing them off, and Joan loved hitting the road and going on new adventures. It was a win-win situation for both of them. She rode shotgun while they scoured the countryside from Michigan to Florida hunting down parts Joe needed for whatever tractor he was restoring at the time. Sometimes they would leave the tractors at home and just take off heading west and see where the road took them. Joan wasn’t always the quiet co-pilot. Joe may have had his tractors, but Joan had her collections as well. Antique dishes and paperweights were just a couple of the things she found intriguing. If there was time for tractors, there was time to hit an auction. There was one day of the week that never had very many activities penciled in, and that was Friday. Friday afternoons were reserved for meeting her friends at the Dairy Queen to catch up on everything that was happening in their lives.
Family was a very important part of Joan’s life. She took advantage of every opportunity to spoil her grandkids rotten. They were her pride and joy and nothing was going to overshadow them in grandma’s world, until … she became a great-grandmother. That changed everything.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Patricia A. Ballenger (David), Pendleton; two granddaughters, Angela Ballenger and Nicole Hays (Erik), both of Pendleton; two stepgrandchildren, Donald Wesley Artman (Paola), Indianapolis, and Rebecca Lynn Oliver (Steve), Spokane, Wash.; two great-grandchildren, Riley and Austin Hays; two sisters-in-law, Mary Moore and Margaret Moore; and many nieces and nephews.
Joan will also be missed by the countless people with whom she shared a little bit of that spoiling nature throughout the years. She always had a stash of hard candy in her pocket and in her purse and when you would see her, a piece was in your hand before you knew it. She would give you a subtle grin and then be on her way. It made you feel special every time it happened.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepson, Robert Joe Artman; two brothers-in-law, John Artman and Roy Artman Jr.; sister-in-law, Mary Artman Chapman; nephew, Terry Moore; her brothers, Paul and wife Alice, Phil and wife Edna, Max and wife Dorothy, Keith and wife Lucille, Marion, and Herman “Junior” Moore; and by the two loves of her life, her first husband Mark A. Clark, who preceded her in death in April 1976, and her second husband Joseph F. Artman who preceded her in death on November 28, 2016.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan, with visitation from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville.
Memorial contributions may be presented to the charity of one’s choice.
