The City of Noblesville has announced plans for a major infrastructure partnership with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to construct five new roundabout intersections and complete other improvements totaling $16 million.
Construction is planned in two phases set to begin in 2021 and 2023 that include the following intersections:
- State Road 32 and State Road 38 (2021)
- State Road 32 and River Road (2021)
- State Road 32 and Mill Creek (2023)
- State Road 38 and Logan Street (2023)
- State Road 38 and Oakmont Drive/Whitcomb Place (2023)
Ditslear
“One of the top objectives of our Noblesville NOW Capital Improvement Plan is to improve infrastructure and traffic flow throughout our community,” said Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear. “These five roundabouts on two heavily traveled state roads will greatly improve east-west connectivity and safety for tens of thousands of drivers every day.”
In 2018, city officials began discussions with INDOT about several intersection projects that were planned in Noblesville with modernized traffic signals. Noblesville proposed altering the projects to include roundabouts instead.
The two agreements between Noblesville and INDOT call for the city to contribute financially to the projects by funding the added costs of the roundabout construction. The $16 million total cost will be split with INDOT covering approximately $9.5 million while the city will contribute $6.5 million.
“I’m proud that Noblesville has partnered with INDOT for these major infrastructure improvements supported by my fellow council members,” said Noblesville Common Councilor Chris Jensen, who serves as chairman of the council’s roads, traffic and engineering committee. “These projects are a wise investment for our community and public safety. The improvements will make it easier for local residents and visitors to get where they need to be, when they need to be there.”
Launched in July 2018, the Noblesville NOW plan unveiled 10 top-priority projects that span the entire community. Each project contributes to Ditslear’s primary objectives of strengthening infrastructure, creating greater economic development, enhancing public safety, improving connectivity and expanding the downtown.
In addition to the new roundabouts, the city already has made progress on several Noblesville NOW projects. Work is happening on the third phase of the Midland Trace Trail, the Levee Trail and the Logan Street Pedestrian Bridge. In addition, the Levinson apartments and parking garage recently broke ground to attract more residents and expand parking capacity in support of downtown merchants.
