County health agency earns nonprofit status

Partnership For A Healthy Hamilton County (PHHC) is pleased to announce that it has earned its 501c3 status – making the long-standing organization its own independent not-for-profit agency.

“This important designation ensures that PHHC will continue to have a platform for addressing the health and wellness of all residents in Hamilton County,” said PHHC Director Janet Gafkjen. “We began our work in 2014 as an initiative under the fiscal agency of the Good Samaritan Network (GSN), and we can’t think of a better way to honor that relationship than to continue doing and supporting the good work of both organizations.”

GSN’s Founder and Executive Director Nancy Chance expressed gratitude for the initiative and support of the county’s hospital systems in establishing PHHC.

“Without their initial and ongoing support of this initiative, PHHC would not exist,” said Chance. “We’re grateful that this important work that we helped launch will continue and grow for years to come.”

As a not-for-profit agency, PHHC will deepen and expand its leadership, support, resourcing and advocacy toward health and wellness across the county, with a central focus on cultivating collaboration.

“I’m grateful to serve as Chair of PHHC’s Board of Directors at this exciting time,” said Dianna Huddleston of Aspire, Inc. “The county needs the type of collaboration and coalition-building that PHHC facilitates to more effectively address health needs.”

Gafkjen, who has served as PHHC’s Director from its inception, says that collaboration is more than a buzzword for PHHC.

“It’s an approach that has been central to our identity from the beginning,” said Gafkjen. “We’ll deepen collaboration and lead the collection and reporting of measurable health outcomes. And we’ll do this alongside the people, agencies and institutions that are committed to community health and wellness to create more opportunities for people to lead their healthiest lives.”

Among PHHC’s primary partners in funding and leadership are Community Health Network, Indiana University Health, Riverview Health and St. Vincent/Ascension. PHHC has also formed many vital partnerships with private and public donors, volunteers and more than 40 agencies and organizations, including Fishers YMCA, Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank, Noblesville Chamber of Commerce, Hamilton County Health Department and the Shepherd’s Center of Hamilton County.

“Hamilton County is a healthier and happier community thanks to PHHC,” said Trisha Straus of Fishers Youth Assistance, another of PHHC’s partners. “By fostering collaborative relationships with community partners and always looking to respond to the changing dynamics of each population, PHHC serves as a community expert for health-related trainings and programs.”
