BROWNSBURG – University left little doubt that it was the school to beat at the Bethesda Christian sectional.
The Trailblazers took care of business at the Class 1A Sectional 58, beating Traders Point Christian 19-0 in five innings Monday morning. University thus defended its sectional title from last year and won its fourth overall. The ‘Blazers will take on Indianapolis Lutheran at 10 a.m. Saturday in the first game of the Morristown regional.
“I think the guys played well,” said University coach Chris Estep. “We scheduled our schedule this year to try to repeat what we did last year.” The Trailblazers reached the 1A championship game last season.
“Winning 29 games was way too many, and we wanted to make sure that we challenged ourselves so when we came to sectional time, regional time, hopefully possibly semi-state or state time, that we were prepared for what we would see, all the different kind of arms on the mound.”
University scored three runs in the first, third and fifth inning, and added five runs in both the second and fourth innings. The ‘Blazers hit two home runs: Dawson Estep sent a solo homer over the left field fence in the second inning, and Alex Washlock cracked a two-run home run into left field in the third inning. Estep and Washlock both scored three runs.
Tyler Galyean was 3-for-5, including two doubles, in the second and fourth innings. Both of those doubles scored two runs; Galyean finished the game with five RBI. Ben Ewer went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Adam Oxley pitched a no-hitter while getting the win. Oxley faced the minimum 15 batters, only issuing one walk in the game. That happened in the fourth inning, but the Trailblazers turned a double play during the next at-bat.
University is now 18-10-1 for the season.
