Thomas Harmas takes over July 1 as principal of Carmel High School replacing the retiring John Williams who headed the state’s largest high school for the past 14 years. Williams retired last month.
Dr. Harmas comes to the high school after 14 years as principal at Creekside Middle School in Carmel. During his tenure there the school was cited as a National Blue Ribbon School.
The new principal earned his doctorate from Oakland City University after undergraduate studies at Indiana University. He graduated from Warren Central High School, Indianapolis.
The Carmel Clay School Board this week also appointed a new principal at Smoky Row Elementary. Lila Jay takes over from Kim Barrett who retired. Ms. Jay was formerly head of Carmel Middle School.
The new appointments means there are vacancies at Creekside and Carmel Middle schools. The school board has searches underway for both positions.
