Edgar Ray “Eddie” Hampton

July 4, 1961 – May 13, 2019

Edgar Ray “Eddie” Hampton, 57, Indianapolis, passed away surrounded by his loving family and caregivers on May 13, 2019 at his brother’s home in Lebanon. Born July 4, 1961 in Tollesboro, Ky., he was the son of the late James Edgar Hampton and Velma Lee (Bennett) Covert.

After graduating from Portsmouth High School, Eddie headed out to make his way in the world. A certified “jack of all trades,” there was no task he couldn’t set up and tackle.  For 14 years he put those skills to use as the manager for the parts and delivery department at Tom Wood Ford.

Although his head and his hands were dedicated to work, Eddie’s heart belonged to sports. He was a Colts fan through and through, and with some of those years being harder than others, he still never gave up hope. Football wasn’t his only sport of choice; he also enjoyed baseball and basketball. And let’s not forget about NASCAR. Rusty Wallace and Kyle Bush were his all-time favorite drivers. When he finally slowed down and had some time to relax, Eddie would head out back to do some yard work. He always took great pride in how his yard and flower beds looked.

No matter what Eddie had going on in his life, family always came first. He is survived by his three brothers, John D. “Buddy” Monroe (Jennie) , Lebanon, Tommy Hampton, Kempton, and Jeff Hampton (fiancée Karen), Noblesville; three sisters, Karen S. Covert, Apopka, Fla., Linda M. Nickerson (Robert), Arcadia, and Brenda K. York (Bobby Joe), Arcadia; his best friend, Marybeth Taylor; and his Black Lab, Kobe. Eddie is also survived by many nieces and nephews.  Having no children of his own, he always thought of them as his kids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Jim Covert; and by his brother, Glenn Lee Hampton.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan, with visitation from noon until the time of service. Burial will follow at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan. Pastor Steve Wallen will be officiating.
