Carmel won its Senior Night game on Friday, beating Terre Haute North 4-1 at the Cherry Tree Softball Complex.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Greyhounds brought in three runs. Ella Ohrvall hit a double to score Ariana Zdobylak, then Sarah Goddard smacked a home run over the left field fence, also sending Ohrvall home.
The Patriots got a run back in the top of the sixth, but Carmel answered, with Sommer Edwards hitting a right field single to score Caroline Roop.
“I thought it took us a while to make some adjustments, and she had a change-up that was throwing us off-balance a little bit,” said Greyhounds coach Ginger Britton, referring to the Terre Haute North pitche. “I thought the girls did a good job later in the game, getting aggressive a little earlier in the count, hitting their pitches.”
Kaitlyn Grimes got the win, pitching six innings with five strikeouts against three hits. Zdobylak and Grimes are the seniors on this year’s Carmel team.
“It’s been amazing,” said Zdobylak, who has been with the team all four years. “Every year has been something that I’ve learned something new moving up. I’ve just learned from other players how to be a leader and it showed this year.”
Meanwhile, this was Grimes’ first year with the Greyhounds, but she had a good experience as well.
“The girls are great,” said Grimes. “They were very welcoming and it was just nice to be able to be myself so fast.”
Carmel is 11-6 and will play games at Crown Point and Kankakee Valley today.
