The Carmel softball team lost to Cathedral Friday, 15-3 in five innings at the Cherry Tree Softball Complex.
The Greyhounds scored all three of their runs in the third inning, cutting into a 5-0 Irish lead. Sarah Goddard reached on error, then advanced to third after Megan Nichols hit a single.
Caroline Roop then hit a 1-0 pitch; Cathedral tried to get Goddard out at home, but she made it in for the score. Meanwhile, Nichols advanced to third. Brooke Bair then stepped up and doubled home Nichols and Roop.
With that, Carmel was within 5-3. But the Irish answered back with three runs in the top of the fourth, then added seven runs in the fifth inning, including a grand slam.
“It’s early in the season,” said Greyhounds coach Ginger Britton. “Every situation, obviously we’re trying to learn from something. I think some of the mistakes that are being made in the last two games, we clean them up and I don’t think those will get made as we continue on through the year. So it’s a good opportunity to see what we need to work on and take it from there.”
Nichols finished the game 2-for-3, while Roop hit a second-inning double.
The Greyhounds are 0-2 for the season and play at Westfield on Monday.
