Four Hamilton County wrestlers earned medals at Saturday’s IHSAA state finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Carmel junior Suhas Chundi took fourth at 106 pounds. Chundi advanced to the semi-finals with a 2-0 decision win over Wabash freshman Jared Brooks, then lost to Culver Academies freshman Brennen Cemus in a 15-0 technical fall. Chundi dropped a 1-0 decision to Evansville Mater Dei sophomore Alec Freeman in the third-place match. Chundi was 29-15 for the season.
Hamilton Southeastern junior Jacob Simone placed eighth at 113 pounds. Simone fell to Floyd Central sophomore Gavinn Alstott in a 5-1 decision in the quarter-finals, then dropped a 6-3 decision to Brownsburg freshman Kamariyon Nelson in the wrestleback match. Simone then lost a 4-3 decision to Oak Hill sophomore Harper Dedman in the seventh-place match. Still, Simone finished his season with a 40-9 record.
Carmel senior Kyle Holman finished sixth at 138 pounds. Holman dropped a 12-2 major decision to Columbus East senior Cayden Rooks in the quarter-finals, but defeated Mount Vernon junior Christopher Wilkerson in the wrestlebacks by a 6-2 decision. Holman was pinned by Avon sophomore Jaden Reynolds in the fifth-place match, and finished his season 28-12.
Hamilton Southeastern junior Andrew Irick placed fourth at 220 pounds. Irick started the day with a pin, getting a second-period fall over Central Noble senior Levi Leffers to advance to the semi-finals. But Irick was pinned in the first period by Brownsburg senior Lawson Aiken in his next match. Irick then dropped the third-place bout to Columbus East senior Jacob Bolte in a 5-4 decision. Irick finished his season with a 35-4 record.
In the team standings, Carmel tied for 23rd with 13 points, while Southeastern tied for 28th with 11 points. Cathedral defended its team championship by scoring 78 points, with Avon totaling 72 points for the runner-up trophy.
