University unleashed a three point shooting barrage Tuesday night, defeating International School of Indiana 87-26 to give coach Brandon Lafferman his 100th coaching victory.
Seven different Trailblazers made at least one three-pointer as the Blazers made 16 of 32 three point attempts. Max Greenamoyer made five triples as part of his team high 17 points. Quinn Steiner had four three pointers for 12 points and Larry Pierce had two three pointers among his 10 points. Jacob Sager gave the Blazers four double figure scorers, making all six of his field goal attempts to tally 12 points.
Accepting congratulations after the game, the sixth year coach of Trailblazers was eager to share the accolades. “This isn’t about me. It is about all the players and assistant coaches I’ve been fortunate to work with.”
University took the lead 18 seconds in to the game on a Sager basket off a Greenamoyer assist and raced to a 20-4 lead at the end of the first quarter as 10 players saw action in the opening period. The Blazers held the Gryphons scoreless for more than six minutes in the second quarter, running off 22 unanswered points on their way to a 46-7 halftime lead.
University had assists on 28 of its 32 made field goals. Sam Mervis had seven assists, Eyal Friedman handed out six and Nate Shatkowski had four assists. The Trailblazers only turned the ball over four times while forcing 21 International turnovers.
The Blazers led the rebounding battle 26-15. Eric Major had five rebounds to lead University.
University improves to 15-3 and will next be in action Friday night at Covenant Christian. Saturday’s PAAC championship game against Shortridge has been postponed to February 14 due to University’s participation in Saturday’s IHSAA Girls Basketball regional at Southwestern.
