Reader in Philippines endorses brother for Hamilton Co. sheriff

Dear Editor,

I have been following my brother Jason Straw’s campaign for Hamilton County sheriff over the past few months, and the way his opponent acts seems strange to me.

First of all, it is well-known that Jason’s opponent works for the sheriff, but he appears to miss 99 percent of the meetings. He also failed to appear to debate Jason at the League of Women Voters debate, but Jason was there and gave a great presentation on how he will improve the sheriff’s department and transparency.

Many of the chronic problems in the jail are medical problems, not police matters. That is why having a critical care trauma nurse from the military in charge is so important with the substance abuse and mental illness issues that crop up.

I don’t think any county will have a better sheriff than my brother, and I look forward to the creative things he will do. He is also not in this to make the office into his own cash cow as so many people do. He already has a military pension and he has promised to just take the base salary and give the rest toward improving the department.

So, Jason’s attitude will ensure that his deputies have the equipment they need and the advanced training. Jason can even provide training on medical issues like he did in the military as a captain specializing in critical care work. He saved the lives of over 600 people on his first tour in Afghanistan alone. Jason is an expert on terrorism, having fought against it where it lives. He is better trained than his “absent” opponent to deal with crisis situations.

I hope people will vote early and Vote Straw.

Sincerely,

Andrew Straw
