Carmel advances to Pike semi-finals, Huskies fall to Tigers

Carmel advanced to the semi-finals at the Class 3A Sectional 10 at Pike on Tuesday after getting past the host Red Devils in penalty kicks.
The game was tied at 3-3 after regulation and overtime. The No. 15-ranked Greyhounds won the PK round 4-2 (making the official final score 4-3), this after a back-and-forth regulation.
Junior Griffin Lee scored the game-tying goal in the closing minutes of regulation. Seniors Graham Rieg and Sam Hildebrand both scored one goal, with junior Noah Green handing out two assists and senior Ethan Yauger providing one assist.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the effort the team put forth tonight and the mettle they exhibited,” said Carmel coach Shane Schmidt. “After going up 2-0, then going down 2-3, the guys kept working and fighting. Now we have a quick turnaround to play Brebeuf tomorrow night.”
The ‘Hounds will play Brebeuf Jesuit at 7 p.m. in the second semi-final. The Braves beat Westfield 2-0 in a Monday first round game.
The first semi-final will feature No. 2 Zionsville and No. 7 North Central. The Panthers held off Guerin Catholic in the other Tuesday game, also winning that one in penalty kicks 7-6 (the official score is 1-0).

Hamilton Heights lost a tough game at Class 2A Sectional 25 on Tuesday, falling to host Lebanon in penalty kicks 8-7, after regulation and overtime ended in a 1-1 tie. (The official final score is 2-1.)
The Huskies scored with two minutes to go in the first half when Luke Vanderwall hit the back of the net on a shot from 25 to 30 yards out. The Tigers scored the equalizer with four minutes left in the second half on a free kick from 19 yards. With one minute to go in regulation, Heights was called for a foul and got a PK change, but Lebanon’s goalkeeper made a big save.
After the overtime, the game went to penalty kicks. After the first five kicks, it was tied at 5-5, then went back and forth until the Tigers won 8-7.
“Player of the game goes to Zach Clark for an excellent game,” said Heights coach Derrick Dean. “He came back and cleared his head after the stopped PK in regulation to bury his overtime PK. This is one great group of boys that played with all their heart. Shame to see their season come to an end. The sectional final game was definitely played tonight.”

On Saturday, Sheridan finished its regular season with a 4-0 win over Anderson Prep Academy.
The Blackhawks scored all four of their goals in the first half. Junior Jacob Leonard scored the first goal of his high school playing career, then Caleb Duke, Kyle Eden and Will Zachery all scored one goal each.
Sheridan goalkeeper Nick Roberts had 12 saves and earned his fifth shutout of the season.
The ‘Hawks are 6-5-1 and play Class 1A No. 3 Heritage Christian at 7 p.m. tonight in the sectional semi-finals.
