Carmel Rotarians were out in full force volunteering to present a free, fun-filled ice cream social for residents on Sept. 18 at Carmel Civic Plaza.
City Councilors Matt Snyder and Rich Taylor, also Carmel Rotarians, helped organize and present the public celebration. Fellow Rotarian Mayor Sue Finkam enjoyed visiting with many of the people who attended.
While Carmel began as a settlement named Bethlehem in the early 1800s, the event celebrated Carmel becoming a city in 1976. The fun evening included two free concerts by Blair Clark & Fun Factor Band and the Cool City Band, a Hula Hoop contest, free Bub’s burgers and ice cream, a VIP tent catered by Fork & Ale, a display by the Clay Township Military Library & Museum, two free photo booths, photos with the giant CarmelFest Eagle, opportunities for the public to visit City Hall Council Chambers and for kids of all ages to sit inside a Carmel Fire Department ladder truck, and a pleasant rain-free evening of socializing with fellow Carmel citizens.

Sponsors included the Camel City Council, Rotary Club of Carmel, Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation, DLZ, Artist Development Company, The Signature Group, MEG & Associates, among others.
The final event celebrating the city’s 50th birthday will be held Nov. 12 at the Carmel-Clay Public Library. That event will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Indiana Pacers becoming an NBA team and will feature all living Carmel mayors, legendary Pacers including Chris Dinari, Rick Fuson, Eddie Gill, and Sarah Baird, and will honor the Simon family.
