Fall Bambird Scramble brings competitive American Mahjong to Hamilton County

Mahjong players across central Indiana will come to the tables this fall as Mahj in the City expands its nationwide Bambird Scramble to Hamilton County.

Presented in partnership with Rack Rebel Co. and Lucky Tiles Mahjong, the scramble delivers structured, competitive American Mahjong to Hamilton County. This summer, Rack Rebel Co. debuted the Bambird Scramble in Indiana to help locals play more, meet new people, and stay connected through flexible, self-scheduled matches. For the fall season, players gain dedicated table access to The Atelier, Lucky Tiles Mahjong’s boutique studio in downtown Noblesville, to host their scramble games.

The Bambird Scramble is designed for players who already know basic tile mechanics, understand the Charleston, and can play independently using the current National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card. Scramble participants propose and accept games on their own schedules, track scores and standings through a custom platform. With communities across the country, the Bambird Scramble brings together friendly competition, real-life connection, and more opportunities to get to the table.

“Our mission has always been to make American mahjong accessible, approachable, and fun for everyone,” said Christina Stainbrook, owner of Rack Rebel Co. “The Bambird Scramble solves the biggest challenge after learning mahjong, finding three other players. The beauty of the scramble is its flexibility; players use the online system to find matches and score them. They can play as much as they want and it will automatically use the two highest scores from the week.”

The scramble officially kicks off Sept. 14 and runs through Nov. 15. Registration is open now; the cost to participate in the official NMJL ladder league is $75, visit Mahj in the City to register. As an official partner and host venue, Lucky Tiles Mahjong will open the doors of The Atelier, its boutique downtown Noblesville studio located inside Linden Tree, giving registered scrambler participants dedicated studio access to schedule and complete matches.

Partnering with Rack Rebel Co. allows us to bring the excitement of the nationwide Bambird Scramble to our community, while giving participants a home at The Atelier to connect, compete, and enjoy community.”

Mahjong, a tile-based game of skill and strategy originating in 19th-century China, has experienced a resurgence across the United States. The American variation uses a specialized 160-tile set and an annually updated card published by the NMJL, requiring players to annually learn new hands to win.

Instagram has become the primary catalyst for the modern American Mahjong boom, transforming the centuries-old pastime into an aesthetic, design-driven visual movement. Across social feeds, vibrant pastel acrylics and curated patterns have replaced the game’s original design roots. Short-form Reels poking fun at the competitive obsession, often featuring spouses playing dress-up to impersonate their wives and seasoned grandmothers at the table, routinely rack up thousands of views. As the trend accelerates, players treat their gear as decor, shopping a retail spectrum that stretches from $40 starter sets at big-box craft stores to luxury, $400-plus sets from boutique retailers like Oh My Mahjong.

“In a typical scramble format, hosting usually means you have to supply all the gear,” Price said. “We wanted to make competitive play far more accessible. Hosting your scramble matches at The Atelier means everything is already set up and waiting for you, so anyone can participate making it easier for newcomers to explore the hobby without a huge financial commitment.”
