Special Olympics Indiana continues its fall sports championship season Sept. 12 and 13 with state softball, golf, and pickleball tournaments as part of Erskine Championship Weekend. These three events are among nine tournaments scheduled to take place in Central Indiana.
The weekend honors the life and legacy of Carl Erskine, a Special Olympics Indiana spokesperson and volunteer, and his son, Jimmy Erskine, who exemplified a life of integrity and excellence, just like his father. With Carl’s passing in 2024, Special Olympics Indiana dedicated this weekend to the duo, marking their impact and shared love of sports.
Fall season state championships include:
- Sept. 12: Softball at Center Grove Lassie League
- Sept. 13: Golf at Hickory Stick Golf Club in Greenwood and Pickleball at The Picklr at Keystone Crossing
- Oct. 4: Cornhole, Flag football, Distance Run/Walk and Soccer at Grand Park, Westfield
- Nov. 21: Unified Volleyball at The Academy Volleyball Club, Indianapolis
Thirty-six softball teams from across the state will travel to the Lassie League fields in Greenwood for state softball. Competition includes traditional Special Olympics teams, Unified teams where individuals with and without intellectual disabilities compete together, and individual skills assessments. Games take place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
State golf returns to Hickory Stick Golf Club in Greenwood, where about 300 athletes and Unified partners will compete in three-, six- and nine-hole events starting at 8:45 a.m. Athletes also compete in a skills competition beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Special Olympics Indiana will host its inaugural pickleball state tournament at The Picklr on East 82nd Street in Indianapolis. Traditional and Unified pairs begin at 9:15 a.m. In all, 82 individuals will compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals.

Nearly 3,000 athletes and Unified partners are expected to take part in the eight championship tournaments this fall. With more than 20,000 athletes and Unified partners, supported by 10,000 coaches and volunteers, Special Olympics Indiana uses sports as a catalyst for social change, exposing inequity and highlighting the abilities of people with intellectual disabilities.
