The Hamilton County Health Department urges residents displaced by flooding to take the following precautions:
Lost birth certificates & health documents
Residents whose birth certificates or other important health documents were lost or damaged during flooding should call the Hamilton County Health Department for assistance at (317) 776-8500.
Tetanus vaccination status
Because floodwater can contain contaminants that increase the risk of infection in exposed cuts or open wounds, residents who have not received a tetanus vaccination within the last 10 years should contact their healthcare provider or the Hamilton County Health Department.
Anyone who is unsure of their vaccination status should check their immunization records at MyVaxIndiana.in.gov.
Private wells
Any well that was covered by floodwater should be considered unsafe until it has been properly evaluated, disinfected, and tested. Until the well has been determined safe:
- Use bottled water for drinking and food preparation.
- Contact the Hamilton County Health Department at (317) 776-8500 for guidance on well disinfection and water testing.
