Sheridan did something on Friday that it hasn’t done in recent memory: Produce a third straight shutout.
The Blackhawks traveled to Carroll for a Hoosier Heartland Conference game and returned home with a 52-0 victory. Sheridan scored in all four quarters, including two touchdowns in each of the last three periods.
On defense, the Blackhawks didn’t allow a point for the third game in a row, the first time they have done this during the last 25 years. All three of those shutouts have come against HHC teams; Sheridan is now 3-0 and leading the conference standings.
The ‘Hawks totaled 372 rushing yards, with James Manis accounting for 201 of those yards on 25 carries. Manis scored three touchdowns, starting with a 66-yard run in the second quarter. He then added two more scores on one-yard runs in the second half.
“We got the ball and drove it back down their throats and scored,” said Sheridan coach Bud Wright. “They couldn’t stop the running game.”
The Blackhawks kept their offense mostly on the ground, but were very efficient when they did take to the air. Drake Delph completed 3 of 5 passes, including two touchdown throws to Jesse Kolb. Delph also ran in a first-quarter touchdown, and made five two-point conversions.
Evan Bourdon completed the Sheridan scoring with a 14-yard run in the fourth quarter. Cameron Hovey gained 75 yards in 19 carries.
“We’re getting better,” said Wright. “We’re coming along.”
The ‘Hawks continue action in the HHC next week with a trip to Clinton Prairie. Overall, Sheridan is 3-1 for the season.
