Three Hamilton County girls soccer teams played their second games at the Zionsville Invitational on Saturday.
Carmel, ranked No. 4 in Indiana’s Class 3A and No. 48 in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s national rankings, beat national No. 45 Toledo Notre Dame 1-0. Susie Soderstrom scored the Greyhounds’ goal with just over three minutes left in the first half, on an assist by Elizabeth Hargis.
Erin Baker had seven goalkeeper saves. The ‘Hounds are now 5-1-1 for the season and hosts Lawrence North on Tuesday.
“Our lack of scoring has been a source of concern all through the August part of our schedule so as a team we decided to relax in this game and use the strength of our team, defense, to secure the win,” said Carmel coach Frank Dixon. “Our backs and midfielders worked hard and supplied enough balls to the forwards to get the job done. Elyse Reed, Cassidy Eckstein, Morgan Parker and Brooke Bailey controlled the midfield and Susie Soderstrom finished her chance for the win.”
Noblesville, No. 2 in 3A and No. 23 nationally, lost its first game of the season to another nationally ranked team, No. 28 Sacred Heart Academy (Louisville), by the score of 2-1.
The Millers scored in the first half, but Sacred Heart moved ahead with two goals in the second half. Noblesville is now 4-1-1 and plays Westfield on Wednesday.
In the junior varsity game, Noblesville beat Sacred Heart 3-2. Jacey Hoopingarner scored the winning goal with five seconds left on Ellie Noel’s assist. Isabella Griffey and Sophie Brisco also scored a goal.
Hamilton Southeastern, No. 1 in 3A and No. 33 nationally, fell to Pickerington North (Ohio) 2-0. It was the first loss of the year for the Royals, who are now 6-1-1 and play 3A No. 9 Fishers (No. 35 nationally) on Wednesday in the Mudsock game.
