Golden Eagles defend sectional title

The Guerin Catholic baseball team defended its sectional championship on Monday by winning Sectional 25 at Crawfordsville.

The Golden Eagles beat Brebeuf Jesuit 1-0 in the championship game. The Golden Eagles scored their run in the bottom of the fifth inning: Grant Beard got on base with a double and Luke Gremelspacher singled him home.

Tate Troxell pitched six dominant innings, striking out 10 and allowing only one hit. Gremelspacher pitched a perfect seventh inning to close the game. Carson Kail hit a double, one of four hits for Guerin Catholic.

In the afternoon semifinal game, the Golden Eagles beat Frankfort 9-3. The Hot Dogs scored in the first inning, but Guerin Catholic responded with four runs in the second inning.

Gremelspacher doubled in Karson Smith, then was sent home by Liam Zorger’s double. Nolan Ratcliff hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Zorger and Brody Cain scored on a Ben Canada single.

The Golden Eagles put up two more runs in the third inning. Zorger batted in Smith, then Canada singled Zorger home.

Frankfort scored two runs in the fifth inning, but Guerin Catholic finished its scoring with three runs in the sixth. Smith tripled Canada and Jackson Baker home, then Beard drove in Smith.

Canada was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, including a double, while Smith went 3-for-4. Harrison Haq threw 11 strikeouts in 4.1 innings.

The Golden Eagles are 24-3-1 and play Northview Saturday in a Class 3A regional. The game site will be announced by the IHSAA on Wednesday.
