Dear Editor:
For those of us concerned with runaway debt in local government, the latest reports on the state’s Indiana Gateway website are discouraging indeed.
According to data the cities provided to the state, two of the top four debtor cities are in Hamilton County.
The top four:
- Carmel: $1.6 billion
- Fishers: $1.4 billion
- Evansville: $1.4 billion
- Fort Wayne: $1.3 billion
Each year the debt grows as spending outpaces revenue, and lenders are happy to draw large interest payments from taxpayer wallets.
From a moral point of view, however, leaving these debts to the next generation is shameful.
