An additional five incumbent state lawmakers are putting their support behind Pike Township Board President Demetrice Hicks in the Democratic Primary for State Senate District 29.

State Senator Lonnie Randolph (D-East Chicago), State Representative Vanessa Summers (D-Indianapolis), State Representative Ragen Hatcher (D-Gary), State Representative Vernon Smith (D-Gary), and State Representative Carolyn B. Jackson (D-Hammond) are all endorsing Hicks.

These lawmakers join earlier endorsements from Indiana House Democratic Floor Leader Cherrish Pryor (D-Indianapolis), State Representative Robin Shackleford (D-Indianapolis), and State Representative Renee Pack (D-Indianapolis), further strengthening Hicks’ support among experienced lawmakers around the state.

“I’m honored to have the support of so many respected leaders from across Indiana as we enter this important phase of the campaign,” Hicks said. “Their trust means a great deal, and it reflects the broad coalition we’re building to move District 29 forward for our residents.”

Hicks, 33, currently serves as President of the Pike Township Board and is the youngest elected official in Marion County to hold a township legislative seat. Hicks is also the youngest Black official in Marion County.

In addition to his role on the Pike Township Board, Hicks has served as a Precinct Committeeman and as the two-term elected President of the Indianapolis Indiana Democrat African American Caucus (IDAAC Indy).

Professionally, Hicks works in the nonprofit sector as a Director of Clinical Operations, overseeing millions in government funding for crisis intervention services. He also works in higher education as an adjunct professor. He has also served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), representing the interests of abused and neglected children in the legal system.

With momentum building and early voting underway, Hicks’ campaign is encouraging voters across the district to make their voices heard in the Democratic Primary.

“I’m excited to continue connecting with voters and sharing our vision for stronger communities, better opportunities, and leadership that listens,” Hicks said.
