Two golfers with Hamilton County ties have made it to the semi-finals of the Indiana Golf Foundation’s Boys State Junior Championship at Purdue University’s Kampen Course.
Ty Gingerich, a senior-to-be at Guerin Catholic, and Carmel’s Nick Frey, a recent Brebeuf Jesuit graduate, are among the final four golfers in the match-play tournament. Gingerich advanced by beating two other county golfers on Thursday.
Gingerich defeated Carmel’s Stephen Kochera in the Round of 16 3 & 2, then beat Westfield’s Benjamin Burgan in the quarter-finals 3 & 1. Burgan made it to the quarter-finals with a win over Carmel’s Jack Crawford, 1 Up, in the Round of 16.
Meanwhile, Frey also got past two county golfers on Thursday to make the semi-finals. Frey beat Westfield’s Drew Pickering 2 & 1 in the Round of 16, then defeated Carmel’s Nick Dentino in the quarter-finals 4 & 3. Dentino beat Greenwood’s Noah Gillard in the Round of 16, in 19 holes.
Noblesville’s Jacob Deakyne made it to the quarter-finals. He beat Plainfield’s Kasey Lilly 1 Up in the Round of 16 before falling to Williamsport’s Peyton Snoeberger 3 & 2 in his quarter-final match.
The semi-finals begin at 8 a.m. today with Gingerich playing Lafayette’s Nicholas Hofman. Frey and Snoeberger will tee off in their semi-final at 8:10 a.m. The winners will play later that day for the championship.
