January 20, 1946 – March 11, 2026
Sam Muir Atherton, Jr., known as Muir to his friends, Bo to a minute circle of friends, left us on March 11, 2026, to take that journey that either perplexes one or fills one with wonder. He will be sorely missed for his wry sense of humor, his extraordinary vision, his appreciation of art and architecture, particularly the cathedrals and forgotten Romanesque chapels of Europe, his affinity for music in almost all its forms, his love of fine cuisine paired with obscure wine vintages, his infatuation with the bistros of Paris and the unusual, out of the way auberges of Provence where true French cuisine could still be found. Muir was educated at Princeton ‘68 and Wharton, yet his quest for knowledge continued throughout his life.
He is survived by his adoring ex-wife, Bethany du Val d’Epremesnil (Romain); sons, Sam Muir Atherton III (Sam Muir Atherton IV) and Winfield Gates Atherton; brother, Peter Lynn Atherton (Julie); sister, Carolynn Muir Atherton Kimura (Walter, deceased); and niece, Emma Rose Atherton Blodgette Palylyk.
Muir was predeceased by his youngest son, Wells Coleman Atherton.
Our dearest Muir, we wish you nothing but a bon voyage, a smooth, fast green, and a Talisker at the end of the day.
