Phyllis Irene McCarty

September 17, 1932 – January 10, 2026

Phyllis Irene McCarty, 93, Sheridan, went to be with her Lord on Saturday evening, January 10, 2026, at Wellbrooke of Westfield in Westfield. Born September 17, 1932, in Boone County, Ind., she was the daughter of Jessie Ermin and Ethel Irene (Elsey) Poer.

Phyllis graduated from Sheridan High School in 1950 and continued her education at Indiana Business College. She was employed by Waitt Elevator in Westfield as their bookkeeper for 30 years. The main love and joy of her life was serving as wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and Bible teacher.

Phyllis was an active member and teacher of both the children’s and women’s bible classes for over 70 years at Gadsden Church of Christ in Lebanon. Phyllis was also a beloved and respected softball coach, winning several championships and tourneys during her 10 years in coaching.

Traveling was one of her favorite activities. During the colder months, Phyllis (and Don) learned to appreciate the snowbird lifestyle, setting their sights on Florida. They enjoyed seeing all their friends, both old and new, and catching up on everything that had been going on in everyone’s lives.

Phyllis is survived by her loving daughters, Jetta Lynn Hall (Steven) of Sheridan and Jodie Lee Freeland (Bob) of Sheridan; five grandchildren, Katie Scott (Anthony), Amy Sanford, Scott Hall, Andrew Freeland (Sarah), and Holly Anderson (Ricky); great-grandchildren, Mattie Scott, Chase Scott, Blake Sanford (Kaylie), Briley Sanford, Nadia Hall, Nigel Freeland, Jade Freeland, Heidi Anderson, and Maizy Anderson.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie Ermin and Ethel Irene (Elsey) Poer; her sisters, Vonda Spray (Calvin), Betty Simms (Tony), and Glendora Walker (Floyd); and by her husband, Donald Earl McCarty on October 22, 2018. He and Phyllis were married on December 1, 1951.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan. Brother Andrew Freeland will be officiating.

Phyllis will be laid to rest at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be presented to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org), or to an organization of your choosing.
