Indiana Artisan Gifts & Gallery, 22 N. Range Line Road, Carmel, is getting ready to welcome the public to two big events in November. Keep reading to find out more.

Woodblock Wonders: Matt Rees’ Indiana birds

Indiana birds inspire the art of Matt Rees. He applies techniques from the glory years of natural history illustration in the mid-1700s and centuries-old Japanese printmakers to create modern woodblock prints that accurately depict these feathered friends in their natural habitat, particularly those that flock to Putnam County, which boasts the most protected land in Indiana.

His striking, detailed pieces evolve from a complex process that he says demands drafting/drawing skills, woodworking skills, manic attentiveness during the printing process, and a healthy dose of luck.

Rees will provide the tools and materials for you to try woodblock printing during 2nd SaturDate, 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 8 at Indiana Artisan Gifts & Gallery.

This event is free, courtesy of a Carmel Arts grant. Reservations are not needed.
