Baseball roundup: Rocks get HCC sweep of Royals

The Westfield baseball team beat Hamilton Southeastern 12-4 Friday at the Royals’ Ken Seitz Field, sweeping the Hoosier Crossroads Conference series.

The Shamrocks scored their first run in the first inning; Andrew Noble got home on Beck Jordan’s RBI fielder’s choice. Westfield added two runs in the second inning. Jake Russell singled in Nick Fero, then Noble got home on Jordan’s base hit.

Trey McManama got Southeastern on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run double that scored Cy Cole and Clark Bucher. The Shamrocks responded with four runs in the top of the third. Ethan Colling hit a two-run single to bring in Aiden Grabowski and Fero, then Jordan doubled Noble and Caden Lindsey home.

Cole singled in Bucher for a Royals run in the bottom of the third, then Maddux Bach hit a bunt single to score McManama, cutting Westfield’s lead to 7-4. But Westfield surged ahead 11-4 with four runs in the top of the fifth. Russell’s center field single brought Lindsey home, Jordan singled in Russell and K Jessup, and Drew Law scored on a passed ball.

Colling smacked a solo home run in the sixth inning to complete the scoring. He went 4-for-5 at the plate. Jordan was 3-for-5 and totaled six RBI. Russell and Law both had two hits. James Kovacs pitched four innings for the win, striking out five. Owen Swinford threw six strikeouts in three innings of relief.

Bucher, Cole, McManama and Isaiah Hamilton all had two hits for Southeastern. Tyler Sarver tossed five strikeouts in two innings.

Westfield is 16-8 and plays Monday at Fort Wayne Carroll. The Royals are 10-17 and host Center Grove Tuesday.

Hamilton Heights overwhelmed Rensselaer Central 22-2 in the seventh-place game of the Hoosier Conference playoffs, which took place Friday at the Bombers’ field.

The Huskies led 5-2 after the first inning, scored five more runs in the third, then put up 10 runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth. Adam Hughes cracked a two-run home run in the first inning, then Nick Hulen blasted a three-run homer in the second inning.

Cy Mason hit three doubles, driving in three runs and scoring two. Hulen, PJ Wright and Adam Hughes all had two hits. Adam Hughes, Cohen Boyd, Dillon Pitts, Owen Hughes and B Heckman all hit one double.

Hulen and Owen Hughes both batted in three runs, with Wright and Adam Hughes driving in two. Luke Davis scored four runs, Hulen scored three, and Wright, Pitts, Adam Hughes and Kyle Michael all scored two.

Pitts pitched all five innings, striking out five.

The Huskies are 7-14 and host Eastbrook today in a doubleheader.
