Tipton student among radiologic sciences graduates at IU Kokomo

Indiana University Kokomo’s School of Nursing and Allied Health Professions (SNAHP) welcomed 25 new healthcare professionals in the radiologic and imaging sciences at its annual pinning ceremony.

Among the graduates is Laruen Irene Shively of Tipton, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging Technology.

Carolyn Townsend, interim dean, said the ceremony commemorates a remarkable milestone in the graduates’ journey, which has been defined by perseverance, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

“Each of you has demonstrated not only the proficiency required in medical imaging but also the compassion and empathy essential to patient care,” Townsend said. “Your expertise will play a pivotal role in diagnosing and treating countless patients, profoundly impacting their lives.”

She encouraged them to take pride in their achievements but to continue to learn and grow.

“Embrace the challenges ahead with the same determination and resilience that brought you to this moment,” she said. “Pursue excellence with integrity and let your passion for helping others guide you. Congratulations to each of you, radiology technologists and medical imaging technicians. Your hard work has paid off, and the future is bright with promise and possibilities. May you continue to shine and inspire.”

Heidi Sebastian, program director of radiologic sciences, shared the story of Marie and Irene Curie, the mother and daughter who introduced the idea of mobile radiography during World War I – an idea that had great impact on the medical imaging world and the ability to treat soldiers wounded in battle.

“The Curies had a passion to change the world that could not be stopped by those who did not believe in them,” Sebastian said. “Today, we are recognizing a group of individuals who have taken what others saw as impossible and used it to change their world. When I look out at our candidates, I see individuals who decided to overcome obstacles as they pursued a degree in the radiologic and imaging sciences. I hope our candidates will find inspiration in pioneers such as Marie Curie, as the past has much to teach us about how we can change the world around us for the better.

Anna Miller, clinical coordinator of the radiography program, offered congratulations on behalf of the faculty and staff.

“Today, we have gathered to celebrate each one of you and your academic achievements,” Miller said. “You have learned, grown, developed professionally, made friends, and established relationships. You have strengthened in knowledge and character in ways we are sure you could not have initially imagined. We have had the distinct privilege to observe this development and are excited to watch as you embark on your next journeys.”
