Softball roundup: Royals get HCC victory

Hamilton Southeastern won a marathon Hoosier Crossroads Conference game Friday at Brownsburg, getting past the Bulldogs 1-0 in nine innings.

The Class 4A No. 8 Royals’ Kenzie Lee led off the top of the ninth with a single, then Haleigh Seitz came in to run for her. Seitz advanced to third base on a wild pitch, then was sent home when Makena Burlingame hit a sacrifice fly. Grace Swedarsky then struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth.

Swedarsky pitched all nine innings, tossing 16 strikeouts and allowing five hits and one walk. Southeastern collected eight hits, with Burlingame and Addison Richmond both getting two hits. Sophia Feher hit a double.

The Royals are 3-2 in conference play and 13-6 overall. Southeastern hosts Anderson Monday.

Carmel dropped a 6-4 eight-inning game to Mooresville Friday at Cherry Tree Softball Complex.

Both teams scored one run in the first inning; the Greyhounds’ Jayden Kleiner smacked a left field home run. Kleiner struck again in the third inning, sending a homer over the center field fence.

Carmel led 2-1, but the Pioneers came back in the fifth inning with a three-run double to go up 4-2. The ‘Hounds tied the game in the sixth inning: Ellie Goddard led off with a double, then Winni Owens doubled her home. Owens scored minutes later when Emily Smith hit a sacrifice bunt.

The game stayed tied until the top of the eighth, when Mooresville scored on an RBI double and RBI single. Owens hit a one-out single, but a fielder’s choice and a strikeout ended the game.

Mia Fleming hit a third-inning triple, in addition to Kleiner and Owens’ two hits.

Carmel is 5-15 and hosts Fishers on Monday.

Westfield fell to Mt. Vernon 8-2 in a Friday home game.

The Shamrocks scored a first-inning run when Chole Tanner singled in Annika Lawrence. The Marauders tied the game in the third inning, then scored two runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth. Ava Kainrath hit a left field home run in the sixth inning.

Tanner was 2-for-3, while Reese Mahannah hit a triple in the fifth inning.

Westfield is 9-8 and hosts Pendleton Heights on Monday.

Noblesville, ranked No. 7 in 4A, lost a 10-1 game Friday at 4A No. 2 Center Grove.

The Trojans scored all of their runs in the first four innings. The Millers got their run in the fifth inning when Izzy Zapp singled in Delaney Rundle. Zapp had two hits, while Haley Schatko hit a double.

Emme Yee threw five strikeouts in 4.2 innings of relief.

Noblesville is 13-6 and hosts 3A No. 5 Yorktown on Monday.
