Baseball roundup: HSE cruises past Lawrence Central; Golden Eagles split conference series

The Hamilton Southeastern baseball team cruised past Lawrence Central 11-1 Monday in a five-inning game at Ken Seitz Field.

The Royals scored a run in the first inning; Cy Cole batted in Maddux Bach with a single. Southeastern put up six runs in the second inning, then added another run in the third, two in the fourth and one more in the fifth.

Clark Bucher hit an RBI triple in the fourth inning.

Bach finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and scored four runs while driving in another two. Parker O’Steen had two hits and two RBIs, with Michael Hoog scoring two runs. Tyler Sarver pitched four innings for the win, with seven strikeouts against two hits.

The Royals are 6-10 and host Fishers tonight for the first game of the Mudsock series.

Guerin Catholic split a Circle City Conference series with Heritage Christian to start the week.

The Golden Eagles won the first game 13-6 on the road. Guerin Catholic never trailed, leading 2-1 after one inning and 4-2 after three innings. The Golden Eagles scored three runs each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Daulton Phillips hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning, while Grant Beard, Carson Kail and Kam Smith all hit one double. Smith scored four runs and drove in two, with Kail also batting in two runs. Tate Troxell got the pitching win, striking out eight over five innings and allowing two hits.

Guerin Catholic lost the second game of the series to Heritage 6-4 on Tuesday in a home game. The Golden Eagles went up 3-0 in the first inning: Ben Canada got home when Smith reached on an error, then Beard singled in Ian Taylor and Smith.

Heritage tied the game in the top of the second inning, then went up 5-3 in the third. A solo home run put Heritage ahead 6-3 in the fourth inning. Guerin Catholic got a run in the sixth when Nolan Ratcliff singled in Finn Holden.

Taylor, Smith and Kail all had two hits. Luke Gremelspacher pitched six innings, tossing five strikeouts.

The Golden Eagles are 3-2 in conference play and 8-6 overall. Guerin Catholic plays at Mount Vernon Thursday.

Westfield fell to Center Grove 7-5 in a Monday game.

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning; the Shamrocks’ Drew Law singled in Jake Russell and Matt Drozlek. The Trojans put up three runs in the second inning and two more in the third to lead 7-2.

Westfield got two runs back in the bottom of the third, with Nick Fero batting in Russell and Drozlek. Lincoln Hoffman scored on an error in the fifth inning, but Center Grove held on for the win.

Ethan Colling hit a double. Aiden Grabowski pitched three innings, striking out four.

The ‘Rocks are 10-4 and begin a Hoosier Crossroads Conference series with Noblesville Thursday at the Millers’ Don Dunker Field.

University fell to Lapel 10-7 in a Tuesday away game.

The Trailblazers scored two runs in the first inning: Ryan Castetter got home when Cooper Burnett drew a bases-loaded walk, then Cooper Cammack scored when Beckett Suh was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Bulldogs scored a run in the first inning and took a 3-2 lead in the third inning. Castetter cracked a two-run home run in the fourth inning, also scoring Phillip Jacobs, who led off with a double.

Lapel added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 5-4. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the fifth, but University tied it up in the sixth inning: Suh doubled in Griffin Wright, then Frankie Steiner sent a two-RBI single into right field, scoring Suh and Caleb Stocker. The Bulldogs added three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on from there.

Wright and Castetter both hit doubles, while Jacobs was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Castetter and Suh both had two hits. Castetter went 3.2 innings, striking out 10.

The Trailblazers are 7-8 and host Cardinal Ritter on Thursday.

Sheridan dropped a Monday game at Frankton 18-5 in five innings.

The Eagles scored 10 runs in the first inning. The Blackhawks rallied in the second inning with four runs, starting with Chance Spencer’s double to bring in Isaiah Garrett. Dayne Voege was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Austin Hinshaw. Caleb Alexander hit a single to bring in Spencer and Braelan Bochner. Alexander scored a fourth-inning run when Hinshaw reached on an error.

Sheridan is 2-8 and plays at Traders Point Christian this afternoon.
