Westfield won its opening game at the Kokomo Invitational Friday night, beating Illiana Christian 8-1.
Both teams began their scoring with a run in the second inning. The Shamrocks’ Reese Mahannah got a walk to start the top of the inning, stole second base and went home when Sydney Jordan sent a base hit into right field.
Westfield added three runs in the third inning, all with two outs. Jordan batted in another run with a left field hit, scoring Chloe Tanner. Reese Gettinger sent a single into center field, bringing in Mahannah and Jordan.
The Shamrocks put up another four runs in the sixth inning. Dylan Todd got home on Ava Kainrath’s sacrifice fly, then Tanner hit a line drive to score Makayla Watson. Sofia Easterhaus and Tanner then scored on errors. Illiana Christian got three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Westfield held on for the win.
Easterhaus, Tanner and Jordan all had two hits. Mackenzie Delph pitched a complete game, striking out seven.
Westfield is 5-3 and continues play at the tournament today by taking on Roncalli at noon. The ‘Rocks play another game at 2 p.m., with their opponent to be determined.
