November 10, 1945 – March 14, 2025
On March 14, 2025, the world lost a dedicated and loyal soul, Steven Dale Heniser. Born in Portland, Ind., on November 10, 1945, Steven spent his vibrant life committed not just to his work but to the people and passions that brought him joy. He was a steadfast fixture in the news industry, having spent many years as a Printer and Single Copy Manager at The News-Dispatch in Michigan City, Ind., before his retirement in 2016. But it was his reliability and wit that made him a beloved figure at work and in his community.
Residing in Cicero, Steven was known for his active lifestyle and diverse interests. A fervent sports enthusiast, he never missed the chance to watch a game, with basketball holding a special place in his heart. He loved playing corn hole and racquetball, tending to his yard and pool, and going for walks and bicycle rides. He cherished the time he spent watching his grandkids compete in athletic events and reading the newspaper. Staying connected with his childhood friends and traveling with his family to state parks were among his favorite pastimes. His dedication and loyalty extended to his role as a loving father, always present and active throughout his boys’ youth. As the famous saying goes, “A man who does not spend time with his family can never be a real man.”
Steven was a devoted husband to his wife Sharon since their marriage on July 8, 1972. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Marc (Jen) Heniser and Michael (Shawna) Heniser; grandchildren, Alyssa (Lukas) Sipe, Kaylee, Ashley, Hope, and Beau; and great-granddaughter, Valerie. He is also survived by his sisters, Marilyn Shelby and Margo (Bill) Hamann. Steven was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and MaryEllen Heniser, and his brother-in-law, Lynn Shelby.
Steve’s wishes were to be cremated and his care has been entrusted to Hartley-Dunnichay Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree in Steve’s honor.
The memory of Steven’s dedicated, loyal, reliable, and witty spirit will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. As we mourn his loss, we encourage you to share your memories of Steven and upload photos to the memorial page. Steven found his joy in service, and his legacy will continue to inspire those he left behind.
