Softball: Millers fall to Top 10 teams

It was a tough day for the Noblesville softball team at the Carmel Invitational on Saturday, as the Millers dropped two games to teams ranked in Class 4A.
First, Noblesville fell to No. 4 Castle 14-4 in six innings. The Millers scored two runs in the top of th efirst; Julia Furiak singled in Chloe Tragesser, then Madison Taylor’s single scored Kyleigh Lowry, who was courtesy running for Furiak.
The Knights scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead and would hold it for the remainder of the game. Noblesville scored two more runs in the third when Furiak hit a home run into center field, which also sent Tragesser home for her second run of the game.
Tragesser, Furiak, Ella White and Taylor all had two hits, with Furiak totaling three RBIs.
The Millers lost their second game of the day to No. 9 Penn 5-4. The Kingsmen scored first in the bottom of the first inning, but Noblesville’s Emily Minett tied it in the second with a solo home run.
The Millers went up 3-1 in the third inning. Chloe Tragesser singled home Abby Brown, then Ella White’s single scored Grace Smith.
Penn scored three runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead, then added another run in the sixth. Noblesville got to within 5-4 when Brown scored after Tragesser reached on error with two outs, but Penn got the final out minutes later.
Brown finished the game 3-for-3 with a double, while Smith and Tragesser both had two hits. Taylor pitched a complete game, striking out seven.
Noblesville is 6-3 and hosts Harrison on Tuesday.

Royals reach championship game at Whiteland

Hamilton Southeastern played two games at the Whiteland Tournament on Saturday.
First, the Royals beat Whiteland 11-4. Southeastern scored in each of the first five innings, beginning with a solo home run from Jordan Rager in the top of the first inning.
The Royals added three runs in the top of the third. Kaelin Wincek scored on an error, then Nicole Dillow singled in Holly Hosfield. Abby Taylor’s RBI groundout sent Ahliza Moore home.
Southeastern got three more runs in the fourth inning, starting with an RBI double by Nicole Lang to score Libby Ratliff. Wincek’s single would score Lang, then Wincek got home on an Abbey Willmann single.
The Royals finished things up with two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. First, Rager cracked her second home run of the game in the fifth, which resulted in two runs; Lillian Leiner singled on to base in the previous at bat. In the sixth inning, Wincek scored on Moore’s RBI groundout, then Bre Zook’s single sent Hosfield home.
Wincek finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Rager totaled three RBIs in a 2-for-3 effort. Lang and Willmann both had two hits.
Courtney Kocal pitched five innings for the win, tossing six strikeouts.
In the championship game, the Royals lost to Decatur Central 3-0. Southeastern was held to two hits, one each from Taylor and Ava Aguilar. Jaylah Guilliam pitched the complete game, striking out four.
The Royals are 7-4 and will host Zionsville on Tuesday.

Greyhounds go 1-2 at own Invitational

Carmel hosted its own Invitational over the weekend and finished play with a 1-2 record.
A late surge gave Carmel an 8-5 win over Brownsburg. The Greyhounds scored two in the top of the first inning when Brooke Bair hit a left field single to score Sarah Goddard and Darby Roberts.
The Bulldogs scored three in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Carmel’s Sophia Derziotis tied the game in the third with a single to score Goddard. But the Bulldogs answered with two runs in the bottom of the third.
The Greyhounds cut Brownsburg’s lead to 5-4 in the sixth when Sommer Edwards scored after Megan Nichols reached on error. Carmel poured in four runs in the seventh inning, starting with Bair’s two-run home run. That also sent Roberts home and gave the ‘Hounds the lead.
Carmel added two more runs minutes later. In the next at-bat, Edwards reached on error, then went home immediately after Sydney Fox nailed a triple. Fox marched home right away, as Nichols was up next and hit a single.
Bair finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Fox and Nichols both had two hits. Edwards pitched the complete game for the win.
The Greyhounds dropped their final game of the day 7-0 to Franklin Central. Sophia Derziotis hit a double as one of three hits for Carmel.
In an earlier game, Carmel fell to Avon 7-5. Sarah Goddard went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs. Stormy Kotzelnick was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Brooke Bair and Sommer Edwards both hit 2-for-3; Bair knocked a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
The Greyhounds are 4-7 and next play at Lawrence North on Tuesday in a Metropolitan Conference game.

Shamrocks split games at Kokomo

Westfield split a pair of games at Kokomo on Saturday.
The Shamrocks first played the Wildkats and lost 11-1 in six innings. Westfield scored its run in the top of the first inning, when Ashley Swartout doubled in Reghan Oland. Kokomo tied the game in the next inning and took the lead in the second by scoring two runs.
In their second game, the ‘Rocks beat Huntington North 7-1. The Vikings scored their run in the bottom of the first inning, but Westfield took control by scoring twice in the fourth.
Sara Harmeyer batted the first run in, as her left field single scored Caroline Maymon. Harmeyer moved to second on a wild pitch, and that’s when Madeline Hunter came in to pinch run for her. Hunter was soon home, as Regan Nickel singled her in.
In the fifth inning, Kelsey Powers banged a two-run home run with no outs, also scoring Corinne Molter. Harmeyer would later hit a triple to send Maymon home. Westfield got two more runs in the sixth inning, with Molter’s double scoring Nickel and Savannah Arvin hitting a sacrifice bunt to score Ashley Swartout.
Nickel, Powers, Molter and Harmeyer all collected two hits, with Powers and Harmeyer both getting two RBIs. Avery Wagner pitched a complete game, striking out seven.
Westfield is 3-7 and will host Sheridan at 5 p.m. on Monday.

Tigers roll past Franklin

Fishers scored two runs in the fifth inning on Saturday, and that was enough to get the Tigers past Franklin Community 2-1 in an away game.
The Grizzly Cubs scored their run in the third inning, but Fishers would soon take the lead. Caroline Bernhardt doubled to get on base, then Sydney Milburn got Bernhardt home with a double of her own. Milburn moved to third on a Kristi Gordon single, then scored when Courtney James sent a single into center field.
James finished the game 2-for-3. Alexis Hall pitched five innings for the win.
The Tigers are 5-6 and host Mount Vernon on Thursday.
