Max McComb scored 20 points to lead University to a 47-43 win over Decatur Central Saturday afternoon at The U Center.
The Trailblazers led wire to wire, jumping out to a 7-0 lead and withstood continual pushes by Decatur Central to improve their record to 13-8 on the season.
University held their largest lead of the night at 37-27 at the end of the third quarter when Zien Bland beat the buzzer off a feed from Noah Cortez. The Hawks scored the first six points of the fourth quarter and the final six minutes were played with the score within two possessions. Decatur Central got as close as 44-43 with 1:30 left. Bland scored again on a layin off a nifty pass from Cooper Cammack. After two consecutive Decatur Central turnovers, Blake Gray iced the game by splitting a pair of foul shots with 5.8 seconds remaining.
The Blazers jumped to their 7-0 lead off a Gray three pointer from the left corner, a pair of McComb free throws and a Cammack layin from an assist by McComb. Decatur fought back to with three points at 14-11 before University scored two layins off the press break for an 18-11 advantage after the first quarter. McComb scored off a pass from Faisal Mohamud before Gray ended the quarter off a cross-court pass from Cammack. McComb led University with nine points.
University hit an offensive slump in the second quarter, scoring just six points and went to halftime with a 24-22 advantage.
University outscored Decatur Central 13-5 in the third quarter with McComb scoring five points and Gray and Mohamud each making a three pointer.
Gray had nine points for University. Bland and Mohamud had six each. Cammack had a team-high nine rebounds.
University is next in action Tuesday evening when they travel to Guerin Catholic for an All-County matchup.
