Huskies get first conference win
Hamilton Heights picked up a Hoosier Conference win over Tipton 5-0 Tuesday in a home game.
The Huskies started out with two runs in the second inning. Sam Wahl’s fielder’s choice got Drew Fryman home, then Ike Peterson scored on a wild pitch. In the third inning, Sam Fulton smacked a double to score Cole Meyer, then Issiac Hickok got home when Peterson hit a sacrifice fly.
“We were so much better at the plate tonight,” said Huskies coach JR Moffatt. “Cut our strikeouts way down. Just putting the ball in play more seemed to give us a little more mojo. We are learning, not there yet, but making progress. Still waiting like everyone else to get some consistent days outside to work on some stuff. I’m not nearly satisfied but I am happy with the progress, a little better everyday means a lot better over the course of a season.”
Heights’ fifth run came in the sixth inning, when Sam Rupe singled home Luke Theiser. Rupe and Meyer both finished the game with two hits.
Meanwhile, Fulton pitched an incredible game. He struck out 12, issued no walks and allowed only five hits.
“It was nice to sit back and watch Sam go to work tonight,” said Moffatt. “He can make a coach’s job very easy when he gets going like this. There’s a reason the University of Tennessee wanted him. He showed tonight how dominant he can be when he has command of the strike zone.
“I’ll give a lot of props to the Tipton hitters who battled him hard and got five hits. I think the fact that he gave no free passes was huge. The lack of BB’s made their hits kinda meaningless when they got them. A lot of young pitchers don’t understand how damaging it can be when you don’t make the opponent earn their way on base. Gabe (Reel) does a great job of handling our pitchers. He’s a great receiver, teacher and calming presence for them.”
Heights is 1-2 in the Hoosier and 3-3 overall. The Huskies finish the conference series at 5 p.m. today at Tipton.
