Rosie Schmidt of the Jonathan Jennings Chapter of DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) of Carmel recently presented a $500 check to Jennifer Hatcher of the Humane Society for Hamilton County (HSHC) in support of the “Pets Healing Vets” program.

The donation funds were raised by the chapter’s Fundraising Committee lead by Margaret Hentz and Rosie Schmidt.

An estimated 22 veterans commit suicide each day while approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized in shelters every year. These alarming statistics prompted HSHC to make it its mission to improve the emotional well-being of Hoosier veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) by pairing them with carefully selected shelter animals in need of homes at no cost to the veteran for the life of the pet. These animals become constant companions for veterans in this “Pets Healing Vets” program. The health benefits and emotional support that these pets provide to the veterans suffering from depression and anxiety are undeniable.

HSHC services Indianapolis, Fishers, Carmel and surrounding towns. Urge veterans in your life who need help to get help.
