Carmel got the biggest test of all to start its season Thursday, hosting defending Class 4A state champion and No. 1 Lawrence Central at the Eric Clark Activity Center.
The Bears got off to a hot start and eventually beat the No. 20 Greyhounds 88-57. Lawrence Central led 23-13 after the first quarter and 48-29 at halftime. The Bears pulled away further in the third period with 19 points.
Senior Izzy Shepherd led Carmel with 14 points, including three 3-pointers. Senior Mackenzie Woods and freshman Catherine Bassi both scored 10 points.
The Greyhounds host Evansville Central Saturday in an afternoon game.
