Meet the cast of ATI’s Lab Series presentation of The Maltese Falcon: A Musical Nightmare

The Actors Theatre of Indiana (ATI) Lab Series returns Saturday, Oct. 19 with The Maltese Falcon: A Musical Nightmare.

This new musical adaptation of the famous novel finds hard-boiled detective Sam Spade wrestling with ghosts, his conscience, and the truth the night before his fateful deposition in the biggest case of his life.

Clay Mabbit is delighted to be returning for another adventure in ATI’s LAB Series, having first appeared in this past spring’s IT Girl. Recent theatre appearances include Brack in Hedda Gabler at Theatre at the Fort and Ira in Predictor with American Lives Theatre. Other local appearances include Ladahlord in James and the Giant Peach with The Children’s Museum, Rick in Building the Wall with Fonseca Theatre Company, Apartment in Crumble (Lay Me Down, Justin Timberlake) with the District Theatre and frequent appearances in Defiance Comedy productions.

Adam B. Shapiro has been seen Off-Broadway in Death of a Salesman, The Mikado, Bastard Jones, and Wikimusical. Since 2008, he has been a fixture of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene in The Golden Bride, The Megille of Itsik Manger, Gimpel the Fool and, most especially, the Drama-Desk and Outer Critics Award-winning Fiddler On The Roof in Yiddish, in which he played The Rabbi and understudied Tevye and Lazer Wolf. Film/TV credits include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, 30 Rock, Master of None, FBI Most Wanted and HBO’s Emmy-winning film The Normal Heart, among others. He is also a MAC Award-winning solo performer and released his debut EP Let Love In in 2021.

Devan Mathias is an actor, director, and teaching artist who is so grateful to be part of the thriving arts community in central Indiana. She is an alum of Ball State University, where she majored in musical theatre. She has collaborated with theatres around Indianapolis, including the Phoenix Theatre, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Beef & Boards, Eclipse, Summit Performance, Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre, American Lives Theatre, and ATI. She is also a company member with the Indianapolis Shakespeare Company. When not on stage, she loves instilling a passion for theatre in young people and has worked with young artists with IRT, Indy Shakes, Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre, Summer Stock Stage, and more.

Eddie Curry is pleased to be making his ATI debut. A mainstay at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre for the last 35 years, he was last seen there in Million Dollar Quartet as Sam Phillips. He spent the summer in Lancaster, Pa., as Grandpa George in the Fulton Theatre production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Locally, he has performed at the Indiana Repertory Theatre, the Phoenix theatre, and Indy Shakes. He has been an AEA member for 32 years.

Hannah Embree is an actor and applied theatre artist based in Indianapolis. She received her BFA in Musical Theatre from Taylor University. Recent acting credits include Dyanne in Million Dollar Quartet at Beef & Boards, Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Hoosier Shakes and Demystifying Shakespeare at Indy Shakes. She is so excited to work with ATI on this project.

Michael Blatt (Director) is a New York City-based director, producer, and theatre educator. He is a co-founder of Little Red Light Theatre, an Off Off Broadway theatre company specializing in Jewish/Queer musicals and plays. He produced/directed Hello Again, Thrill Me: the Leopold & Loeb Story and An Infinite Ache with Little Red Light Theatre. As a Director, he has worked in Bergen, Norway, where he directed a new Norwegian translation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. He directed/choreographed All Kinds of People for Inside Broadway, which is a program to bring Broadway shows to NYC Public schools. Other directing credits include Fiddler on the Roof and Escape to Margaritaville at Woodstock Playhouse and Always Patsy Cline and Legally Blonde at Priscilla Beach Theatre. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Big Bang for Actors Theatre of Indiana and a world premiere devised play entitled Finding Home at Northern Michigan University. He is a member of The Playwriting and Directing Workshop at The Actors Studio. He is currently an adjunct Professor at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC.

Ginger Stoltz (Musical Director) is excited to musically direct this production of The Maltese Falcon. She has musically directed and performed with many Indianapolis-based theaters, non-profit organizations, and big bands. Recent projects include Bright Star with Purdue University, Tick, Tick, BOOM! with Phoenix Theatre, Little Shop of Horrors, Spelling Bee, and Pippin with Claude McNeal Productions, Andrew Lippa’s The Wild Party, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical, and Fun Home with Footlite Musicals, and Twelfth Night with Southbank Theatre Co. Last year she musically directed IT Girl, part of the Lab Series with ATI.

Once again this year, ATI’s Lab Series will be presented at the Carmel Clay Public Library, 425 E. Main St. The Lab Series program is designed to nurture new plays and playwrights. Join the staff, cast, and playwright at 2p.m. Oct. 19 for a reading and a talk-back session.
