Blackhawks back at it, shut out Tri-Central in first win of the season

Sheridan picked up its first win of the season Friday, shutting out Tri-Central 29-0 at Bud Wright Stadium.

It was the Blackhawks’ Hoosier Heartland Conference opener as well. Sheridan scored its first touchdown of the game in the second quarter, with Alex Cravens taking an 18-yard run into the end zone. Jacob Hall caught a two-point conversion throw from Caleb Alexander, and the Hawks had an 8-0 halftime lead.

“We played a lot better than we had been,” said Sheridan coach Bud Wright. “We had a slow start, but we kept getting better. We played pretty good the second half.”

The Blackhawks put up 21 points in the second half. Caleb Alexander caught two touchdown passes from Brock Hagan; both throws were over 40 yards. It was Hagan’s first start at quarterback.

“He was awful nervous to start with,” said Wright. “He settled down in the second half and did a nice job.”

Hagan also ran for a touchdown, a three-yard sprint with 36 seconds left in the third quarter. Owen Bell kicked all three extra points.

Hagan threw 5-for-8 and totaled 121 yards. Jaylen Arnold led the rushing with 109 yards. Sheridan’s defense was exceptional, especially on the pass – the Blackhawks held the Trojans to minus 4 yards over the air.

“For the most part, we buckled down and stopped them,” said Wright.

Sheridan is 1-2 and travels to Clinton Central next Friday.
