Up for auction: 1919 Chicago White Sox newspaper lot

Coverage of 1919 World Series, known for “Black Sox Scandal”

Vintage memorabilia related to one of Major League Baseball’s most notorious scandals is up for auction, with proceeds to benefit the Center for the Performing Arts’ mission of arts and education.

The items on the block are front pages from the Chicago Tribune featuring coverage of the 1919 World Series, the setting for the infamous “Black Sox Scandal” in which eight players from the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the series to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for payoffs from organized crime figures. The incident was memorialized in the book and film Eight Men Out and has inspired countless other references in the popular culture.

The collection consists of eight newspaper pages in 23.25-by-29-inch frames, covering the entire eight-game series from Oct. 2 to 9, 1919. They were donated to the Center by Marty and Kim Rosenberg of Noblesville and are now posted for bidding at Heritage Auctions.
