July 20, 1953 – May 26, 2024
Neil Richard “Rick” McCullough, 70, Sheridan, passed away unexpectedly at Putnam County Hospital in Greencastle, Ind., on Sunday evening, May 26, 2024. Born July 20, 1953, in Noblesville, he was the son of Neil Meredith and Marcia J. (Evans) McCullough.
He was a 1971 graduate of Sheridan High School.
Rick had unique gifts. He had the mind of an engineer. He knew how things worked (especially the really big things) and how they came apart (and equally as important, how they went back together), and he had the hands of a master mechanic. The first 20 years of his career were spent working on construction equipment with the former Indiana Rental Company. He later hired on with Reynolds Farm Equipment in Fishers, retiring from the company after 26 years of dedicated service.
When it came to working with his hands, Rick was as skilled at woodworking as he was at fixing an excavator or a bulldozer. He loved making furniture and special gifts for family and friends. His greatest special gift (and the one he was the proudest of) was the home he built for his family. His blood, sweat, and tears went into its construction, and his heart and soul helped fill it with love.
Although he was very proud of his gardening achievements, most of his free time was devoted to fishing. Thinking about it, talking about it, and eventually going and doing it (which usually leads to more talking about it). However, what meant the most to Rick was his family, his friends, and of course, his fishing buddies.
Rick is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen M. “Kathy” (McDonald) McCullough. She and Rick were married on June 15, 1990. Also surviving are his mother, Marcia J. (Evans) McCullough; two sons, Patrick Greenough (Rebekah) of Sheridan and Bradley Greenough of Sheridan; two daughters, Marie Nicole Lane (Derek) of Camden, Ind., and Sarah Jane McCullough of Sheridan; grandchildren, Grace, Madison, Ivan, Neil, and Eleanora; brother, Michael Myron McCullough (Ludi) of Sheridan; two sisters, Karen Sue Thomas (Dan) of Hawaii and Katharine Jane Godbey (Ron) of Tennessee; many nieces and nephews; and by his mother-in-law, Leslie McDonald of Sheridan.
He was preceded in death by his father, Neil Meredith McCullough; father-in-law, Henry McDonald; and by his canine partner in crime, Duke.
Rick’s impact was felt by everyone who knew him, and his passing will leave an unfillable gap in the hearts of his friends, family, and loved ones.
A celebration of Rick’s life will take place from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, June 15, 2024 (which would have been Rick and Kathy’s 34th anniversary), at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan.
