Eclipse 2024 programming to include original content & news coverage
In anticipation of the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8, WFIU Public Radio and WTIU Public Television in Bloomington, Ind., are creating multiplatform content for WFIU and WTIU’s broadcast, digital, and social media channels to help audiences learn more about this once-in-a-lifetime event and how it can be experienced.
WFIU and WTIU’s short-form videos cover a wide variety science and safety topics, answering questions such as:
- How can you keep your eyes and camera safe during a solar eclipse?
- What bizarre behavior do animals show during an eclipse?
- What kind of phenomena can you see even if it’s cloudy?
Other short features explore eclipse-related folklore surrounding eclipses as angry gods, acts of romance, Greeks “tricking” the sun, and more.
The first set of videos have launched on WFIU and WTIU’s YouTube channel and Eclipse 2024 website, with new videos releasing each weekday through April 4. These videos will also appear on WFIU and WTIU’s Facebook and Instagram accounts and WTIU’s broadcast channel. Companion audio segments developed from the video content will air on WFIU’s broadcast channel.
In addition to the science, safety, and folklore videos, the WFIU/WTIU News team is providing coverage of the eclipse through online and on-air features and eclipse-themed news programming. Noon Edition, the news team’s weekly public affairs radio series, will host a live broadcast from WonderLab in Bloomington to discuss the upcoming eclipse. The program will air at noon on Friday, April 5 on WFIU.
WFIU and WTIU’s eclipse programming series culminates in a half-hour live special produced by the WFIU/WTIU News team airing at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 8 on WFIU and WTIU. The news program will recap the day’s events, featuring reporting from multiple locations across south central Indiana.
