On Tuesday, Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam officially introduced the Mayor’s Advisory Commission on Arts.
This commission is set to play a crucial role in advising the mayor on matters such as the allocation of funds to non-profit arts organizations, the procurement and installation of public art and the development of arts programming across the city. The City of Carmel has gained national recognition for its outstanding public art installations and vibrant performing arts scene.

“The establishment of the Arts Commission marks the realization of my commitment to fostering increased community engagement in our arts initiatives and public art acquisitions,” Mayor Finkam said. “I am delighted to announce that Laura Campbell, a former city council member, will be assuming the role of chair for this commission. With her extensive experience in overseeing our city’s public investment in the arts and her genuine passion for the arts as a patron, Laura is an excellent choice to lead this endeavor.”
Campbell will guide a team of seven appointees within the commission, with four individuals chosen by Mayor Finkam and three by the Carmel City Council. This commission will serve as the successor to the Public Art Advisory Committee, distinguishing itself from the Carmel Arts Council, which operates independently as a 501(c)(3) organization.
“The seven members of the commission bring varied and talented backgrounds together to focus on this important initiative,” Campbell said. “The arts are a major economic driver in the City of Carmel, and Mayor Finkam’s commitment to receiving input from the community is essential to the continued success of the arts organizations in Carmel.”
Mayor Finkam signed an executive order in February creating the Advisory Commission on Arts whose responsibilities include:
- Reviewing annual arts grant applications and recommending grantees based on budget and need
- Developing a master plan for public art
- Working with city departments and art consultants to determine future acquisitions and locations for public art
- Providing feedback on arts programming
- Receiving and reporting input from the city on public art throughout Carmel
