Staff members from Breathe Easy Hamilton County (BEHC), a leading tobacco control agency, took a proactive step towards promoting public health by participating in Public Health Day at the Indiana Statehouse.

The event, hosted by the Indiana Department of Health, provided a platform for key stakeholders to converge, share insights, and address critical issues in the realm of public health.

The day commenced with an insightful speech from Governor Eric Holcomb, setting the tone for discussions centered around enhancing public health policies and initiatives. A highlight of the event was a panel discussion featuring experts delving into topics crucial for the well-being of Indiana residents, particularly focusing on the Health First Indiana initiative.

The dedication and contribution of local health department heroes were celebrated during an award ceremony, recognizing their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the health of their communities. BEHC extends its heartfelt congratulations to the honorees for their outstanding service and dedication.

One of the key moments of the day was the meeting between BECH staff and Senator J.D Ford (D-Indianapolis). The agency took this opportunity to advocate for vital measures aimed at curbing tobacco use among the youth. Discussions revolved around the urgency of implementing higher cigarette taxes and reinforcing regulations on vaping products to mitigate the growing public health concerns associated with these practices.

“Breathe Easy Hamilton County is steadfast in its commitment to championing public health,” BEHC Executive Director Stacy Collins said. “Our engagement with Senator Ford was an important step in advancing policies that can make a significant impact on reducing tobacco-related harm in our community.”

As a tobacco control agency, BEHC understands the multifaceted challenges posed by tobacco use and vaping. Advocating for stronger regulations aligns with the agency’s mission to create an environment that fosters healthier choices and protects the well-being of residents.

The insights gained from Public Health Day will inform BEHC’s ongoing efforts to collaborate with lawmakers, community leaders, and stakeholders to build a healthier future for Hamilton County and beyond.
